Catch the next generation of runners in action. Local schools, families and media are invited to a practice run for the Peoplecare 2km Kids Fun Run on Sunday 18 May – a preview of what’s to come at the McGrath Wollongong Running Festival.

Wollongong, NSW: The McGrath Wollongong Running Festival is once again calling on the region’s youngest runners to lace up their sneakers and take part in the Peoplecare 2km Kids Fun Run, held on Sunday 1 June 2025. Open to children aged 5–12 years, the event encourages kids to get active and celebrate the joy of movement with friends and families.
Local schools are encouraged to take part in the Schools Competition, with the school that registers the most students winning $500 and the Wollongong Running Festival perpetual trophy. School teams with 50 or more students will also receive a $5 donation per registration back to their school. Last year’s winners, St Michael’s Catholic Primary School, earned over $1,000 due to their large number of registrations. They will be returning in 2025 to defend their title.
James Bryce, Principal of St Michael’s Catholic Primary School, Thirroul says their school had a fantastic time last year and are looking forward to this year’s event.
"We see real benefits in getting our students involved in events like this. For many, it was their first time taking part in a running event and they left feeling like champions. It’s a fantastic way to build confidence, resilience and healthy habits, while fostering community spirit in a fun, inclusive setting.”
To build excitement ahead of the big day, the Festival team will visit school assemblies throughout the region to share their love of running and inspire kids to give it a go.
The spotlight event in the lead-up is the Kids 2km Practice Run, taking place on Sunday 18 May in Lang Park at 9:30am. This free, non-competitive session will give kids the chance to try out the course and get a feel for running 2km in a fun and supportive environment. The media is warmly invited to attend to capture the energy and enthusiasm of the next generation of runners.
Race Director Angela Saville says that practice sessions like this are so important for helping kids feel comfortable and confident.
“Giving kids the chance to run the course ahead of time makes a huge difference. It helps them feel more confident and prepared, eases any nerves, and turns race day into something they can look forward to. It’s a great way to encourage positive connections with movement.”
The McGrath Wollongong Running Festival is committed to creating a community-focused event that welcomes runners of all ages and abilities.
